Syfer Technology Ltd.
Smaller package for high voltage capacitors
Syfer’s latest range of 4kV DC rated capacitors are
available in the popular 1808, 1812, 2220 and 2225
case sizes, thereby delivering significant board space
reductions and design flexibility, while at the same time,
saving on costs. Until now, the minimum case size required to accommodate 4kV rated capacitors
has been the bulky and comparatively expensive 3640.
Devices in the new range are offered in both the ultra-stable C0G (NP0) dielectric and the X7R
dielectric, with capacitance values up to 5.6nF. Available in the 1808 package, for example, are C0G
devices up to 150pF and X7R capacitors up to 1nF. For higher capacitance ranges at 4kV DC, Syfer
offers C0G devices up to 1.2nF and X7R dielectric components to 5.6nF in the case size 2225.
The innovative design of the new range has been specifically engineered by Syfer’s in-house
development team to reduce the possibility of arcing across the surface of the capacitor. However,
for best results, to cover for variations in soldering conditions and end use environments, the
company recommends that a conformal coating is applied after soldering. To reduce the possibility of
mechanical cracking and enhance reliability, the successful Syfer FlexiCap termination will be applied
across the full range as standard.
These high voltage capacitors are likely to be of most interest to engineers seeking efficient and
reliable voltage protection at increased levels. The range will particularly suit applications in the
communications and telecoms sectors, as well as industrial and military markets. Specific
applications include inverters and backlighting circuits for liquid crystal displays.
