Classifield MLCCs for confidence in AC circuits If you are a power supply designer commonly using de-rated DC MLCCs for AC applications, but you are frustrated that you don’t know more about their expected behaviour, then the answer is at hand. - Matt Ellis of Syfer Technology explains. Engineers have been using de-rated DC multilayer chip capacitors (MLCCs) for years to meet the need for capacitance in AC circuits higher than the 4.7nF norm. While such a solution provides the required reliability, that is, the device will work in the circuit, there is no knowledge of precisely how the capacitor will behave under operational conditions.
